Being the busy New Yorkers that we are, we are ALWAYS looking for places that we can consider to be a “one stop shop,” to help save us time and energy. We can’t help it, it’s the New York City way of life! So whenever I stumbled upon the gem that Clay Health Club & Spa is, I couldn’t keep it to myself! This boutique health club and spa is ideally located on West 14th street, just a short walk from Union Square, and it is truly an experience that offers a gym, spa, nutritionist, classes, personal trainers, and healthy snack bar at its members’ fingertips!
In addition (I know, can it get any better?!), they also have lounge areas and tables around a warm fireplace that are ideal for relaxing, catching up on email, or even conducting business meetings in style! They have so much to offer in their crisp, peaceful atmosphere that it is a must visit place for every New Yorker or traveler visiting the city.
I’ll admit it, I haven’t been the best about scheduling a workout into my routine lately. It’s difficult for us busy Mamas, or at least for THIS ONE! So I was beyond excited to meet with Paula Procida, a Clay trainer that specializes in working with women prenatal and postnatal and understands a woman’s body and what she goes through after having a baby. Before we started working out, I had the chance to sit with Paula and ask questions about working out.
My main burning question being… “What if we are too busy to make it to the gym or fit a regular workout into our schedule?” Paula patiently explained that we need to fit the workout into our schedules in a way that works best for us. We can do a little bit scattered all throughout the day if that’s what works for us, or incorporate 45 minutes all at once during naptime. She also suggested working it into regular daily chores such as folding laundry, doing squats while lifting your little ones, or putting groceries away with a cardio twist…whatever works for you!
Paula and I had a wonderful training session where she took all of my motherly concerns into consideration and gave me just the boost that I needed to get back on track with working out! The wonderful trainers at Clay will work with you and all your specific needs to put together a custom workout plan that works for you.
The Nutrition Center
I consider myself pretty health conscious. I try to be on top of everything that my family is eating and make sure that it is doing their bodies good! But, I can’t control everything, so it was lovely to have a chat with the Clay Nutritionist, Shira Lenchewski RD. The programs she implements at Clay with her clients focus on living a healthy lifestyle that makes the insides of their bodies just as happy and healthy as the outsides. She works with many different clients whose concerns range from pre and post natal, risks of chronic diseases, stress managements, weight loss, and many more!
Here are some top tips from Shira:
- Don’t eat foods just because you read that they are healthy. Work healthy foods into your diet that you enjoy eating!
- What’s the best sugar substitute? Coconut sugar! (When in doubt, choose natural!)
- Don’t cut things that you think are bad for you out of your diet that you crave, just eat them in moderation.
- Eat for your health and for looking beautiful on the inside AND out!
I definitely treat myself to a manicure twice a month, but up until this week, I have never had a massage! So I was beyond excited to be invited to the Clay Spa for a massage, and boy did I need it! Sitting behind a computer all day really adds the knots to your neck and shoulders, so if you are anything like me, run to Clay Spa!
My massage was beyond relaxing, it was so nice to be able to take some time to focus on myself and be pampered. Before my massage, I had the opportunity to meet with the Spa Manager & Licensed Skin Therapist, Jeni Sykes who answered all of my questions about skin and beauty. Here are her amazing tips:
- Choose a gentle cleaner that is PH balanced and detergent free. Try cleansers like Ormedic Balancing Cleanser by Image, Cetaphil/Cera Ve, and toner Thayers.
- Don’t forget to exfoliate with products that sit on the skin like masks and foam cleansers, avoiding abrasive scrubs.
- Make sure you use a moisturizer with SPF in it EVERYDAY!
- If you see problems or major changes in your skin, try seeking help from a skin therapist to diagnose the issue.
